Abstract

SYNOPSIS The ability of Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis to form mycorrhizae with four species of temperate and three species of tropical mycorrhizal fungi was determined “in vitro” at five different temperatures. Cenococcum graniforme was shown to be unaffected by temperature. Two species of Hebeloma and two species of Rhizopogon tested showed similar behaviour with maxima calculated at 23 and 24 °C respectively. Mycorrhizal formation by Pisolithus tinctorius was highest at 25 °C while Suillus sp. demonstrated a maximum at 20°C. The mycorrhizal fungi isolated from tropical conditions did not always show an affinity for higher temperatures.
