Abstract

1. 1.|Thermal behaviour of normal and neoplastic tissues of a rat is modelled by a set of simultaneous first-order linear ordinary differential equations. This model successfully describes the available data during normothermia and whole-body hyperthermia. 2. 2.|Model simultations suggest that tumour temperature can be changed by variations in tumour blood flow; however, large modifications of blood flow are necessary to obtain appreciable changes. 3. 3.|Numerical simulations are carried out to compare the following modes of inducing hyperthermia: whole-body and localized hyperthermia by microwave diathermy, and hyperthermia due to regional perfusion with pre-heated blood. Hyperthermia due to blood convection is suggested to be the most efficient of the three modes of hypthermia studied.
