Abstract

The temperature distribution in an arc-heated plasma jet (5 to 20 kw) operated with argon or nitrogen (15 to 60 1. min-1) has been measured spectroscopically; in addition the average temperature has been estimated from the heat input. The discrepancy between the results obtained by these two different approaches is discussed. The thermal efficiency, as determined from the electrical power input and the heat remaining in the gas after allowing for losses to the cooling water, was in the range 30.2% to 81.6%.
