Abstract

The optical absorption and magnetic circular dichroism (m.c.d.) of tris(acetylacetonato) iron III [Fe(acac)3] in solution and polymer film has been measured at various temperatures over the region 3000–6000 A. The m.c.d. shows three broad bands at 3500 A, 4300 A and 5000 A. Temperature-dependent measurements show that the m.c.d. is mainly determined by the Faraday C parameter. An interpretation is given on the basis of spin-orbit coupling mechanisms. The band at 5000 A is assumed to be a spin-forbidden transition.
