Abstract

Temperature dependent low resolution microwave (LRMW) spectra of p-fluorothioanisole are consistent with a planar conformational species and a higher energy species in which the expectation value of the torsional angle is significantly larger than 0°. The relative intensity and relative energy of this species preclude assigning it to a second conformational form. This series may be produced by a collection of vibrationally excited states with similar rotational constants and its enhanced intensity may result from additional relaxation channels available to these states. This study demonstrates that temperature dependent measurements are essential in the assignment and interpretation of LRMW spectra of large flexible molecules.
