Abstract

The kinetics of the quenching of metastable O( 1S) atoms by a number of chlorofluoromethanes has been studied by a pulsed VUV resonance lamp for the generation of the metastable species and by the forbidden transition at 557 nm for their detection. The rate constants of all investigated quenchers are temperature indpendent in the range from 215 to 445 K. The constants vary greatly from 3.5×10 −10 to 2.2×10 −17 cm 3 s −1 and depend considerably on the number of Cl atoms of the methanes.
