Abstract

A calculation of the temperature dependence of the k = 0 frequency spectrum of solid orthorhombic HCI has been carried out within the context of the self-consistent phonon theory in the temperature range 0 K to the first order phase transition temperature of 98.4 K. A potential model due to Grout and Leech is used for the description of the crystal interactions. Although anharmonic effects are found to be important, no soft mode behavior near the 98.4 K phase transition temperature. Comparison is made with the available experimental data.
