Abstract
The ground state energy minimum of some ions occurs when the electronic states couple to the lattice distortions to form vibronic states (electronic + vibrational). Under certain circumstances the vibrational coupling can contribute energy to the system which is greater than the spin-orbit splitting. In this investigation the vibronic states are characterized by their effect on the attenuation of microwave frequency sound waves. The magnetic field dependence of the attenuation resulting from the Zeeman splitting of paramagnetic vibronic states (acoustic paramagnetic resonance: APR) is used to monitor the population of particular energy levels.
