Abstract

The exponent and the prefactor of the decay rate of a metastable system coupled to an environment at temperature T are determined. Analytical methods for high and intermediate temperatures are combined with an accurate numerical method for low temperatures where tunneling transitions prevail. The calculations cover the entire range of parameters of interest in the problem of macroscopic quantum tunneling in systems involving the Josephson effect.
