Abstract

Single crystals of La 3Co and Lu 3Co were obtained by the Czochralski method from a levitated melt. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity have been measured. After subtracting the temperature-independent term, the susceptibility of Lu 3Co exhibits Curie-Weiss behaviour with μ eff = 0.61 μ B Per formula unit. For La 3Co, after subtracting the lanthanum contribution and the temperature-independent term, μ eff = 0.6 μ B per formula unit was found from measurements made in the range 4.2–210 K. For the resistivity we observed a T 2-dependence at low temperatures and a negative curvature and a tendency to saturate at higher temperatures.
