Abstract
Recent studies on the temperature dependence of elastic constants for geophysical minerals have been critically examined. It has been found that an intimate relationship exists between the temperature dependence of elastic constants and volume expansion for MgO, CaO, Al 2O 3 and Mg 2SiO 4 for a wide range of temperatures. Such a relationship can be represented by a power law as revealed by Murnaghan's approximation. Values of elastic constants and bulk moduli have been predicted at higher temperatures using the volume expansion estimated from the Shanker equation for the thermal pressure.
