Abstract

IT has been suggested that changes in the physical state of phospholipids are responsible for the observed dependence upon temperature and membrane composition of the self-diffusion of sodium ions through lipid vesicles1 and of diverse membrane transport processes2–4 some of which are mediated by enzymes5,6. This is supported to some extent by the detection of phase-transitions in both natural membranes7–10 and in lipid-extracts11–13 using X-ray diffraction and other techniques. It seems, however, that only membranes of low cholesterol content exhibit any of the usual characteristics of these transitions1,9,12,13.
