Abstract

This paper provides a tutorial review of the variable structure control system design philosophy. This method allows direct performance specification and exhibits inherent robustness properties. The problem of providing robust temperature control for an industrial furnace is formulated in terms of the variable structure system approach. Simulation results which are performed on different plant models generated from on-line identification are presented to illustrate the robustness of the approach.
