Abstract

Transition between the 3D antiferromagnetic and the 1D ferromagnetic phases of CsNiF 3 ( T N=2.61 K) is investigated by optical absrption measurements of the spin-forbidden 3A 2g→ 1T 2g band. The sharp features attributed to exciton lines show only little changes around T N when measured in zero external magnetic field. Instead, the field dependence of exciton-phonon lines investigated at 2 K indicates an appearance of a disordered spin structure in the field region 0.2 T< H<0.55 T. Presumably this is an incommensurate magnetic phase. Anomalous changes in the temperature dependeces of the intensity and the peak position of the hot-magnon side band are observed near T N.
