Abstract

Heavy fermion compounds exhibit various elastic anomalies below the fluctuation temperature T ∗. Longitudinal elastic constant depression, anomalous thermal expansion and magnetostriction and dramatic high field effects in elastic constants have been observed in CeCu 6, CeRu 2Si 2 and UPt 3. These phenomena are due to a large Grüneisen parameter coupling to narrow quasiparticle bands and they will be quantitatively described by a scaling ansatz, a deformation potential model and a microscopic theory.
