Abstract

MICROPALAEONTOLOGICAL and lithological investigations, undertaken last summer on five sediment cores from the Arctic Ocean basin, are presented in this communication. To our knowledge, this is the first instance in which tests of planktonic Foraminifera known to-day to inhabit temperate oceanic waters have been found in Arctic Ocean deposits. The sediments were raised from the Alpha Rise, which extends from north of Ellesmere Island to the Siberian Shelf, and is subparallel to the Lomonosov Ridge.
