Abstract
In this study, the way how family as a basic social institution takes place at the teaching curriculums sociology at secondary education was examined. Family is the most basic milestone and a small example of society in all societies. As for Turkish society, it has the feature of axis institution affecting and forming other institutions. The importance of family as an institution in Turkey takes place in various types at different levels of teaching and teaching curriculums. The institution of family has been studied in limited ways at the courses of social studies, knowledge of religious culture and morality, history and some other courses. Family as a social institution is examined at sociology teaching curriculums with all its aspects. Family has generally been regarded within the basic concepts related to family in the curriculums applied from the very beginning up to the current time. In particular, the content aiming at basic characteristics of the Republic and the rights granted to women in the programs of 1924, 1934 and 1938 are striking. It is clear in the curriculums that general characteristics of Turkish family and the content concerning the change Turkish family experienced throughout historical process is not sufficient.
