Abstract

Sir Robert May is the 35th most influential person in Britain, according to a recent report in the Observer newspaper. Not surprising, perhaps, given that he has had the ear of the Prime Minister – number one in the list – for the last five years as the government's chief science advisor. Moreover, he has recently taken over as president of the Royal Society, one of the most venerable scientific societies in the world.
