Abstract

In response to rapidly changing and highly competitive markets, organisations are focused on cost reduction and organisational efficiency. Managers are expected to operate in a more flexible manner and need to add new skills to existing ones. Of those managers who survived restructuring programmes, 75% had seen an increase in their responsibilities and workload, requiring access to new sources of information. This article explores the factors that will support new workstyles and the technologies and applications that can be employed to implement change successfully within the next five to fifteen years. Although the focus of this article is on teleworking, many of the observations apply equally well to other aspects of the future working environment.
