Abstract

Television, which is accepted as the most effective media and having the highest target audience level, is also characterized as one of the most important socialization agents for the individuals and the society. The primary motive of choosing news reports which are perceived as by the children is that the news reports are presented with a claim of reflecting pure reality or real life. In other words, one of the main goals of this research is to identify children's general judgment of the audiovisual messages which they received from the news reports; to analyze these messages to determine the social system they live in. The other goal is to determine if children are influenced by news reports in their emotional processes such as expressing their feelings, emotional affections (being sorry, happy, and so on), sharing feelings and experiences and developing empathy. Concerning the media literacy, this study aims to state the children's ideas and opinions which they build on the people and institutions they watch on news reports. In this respect, survey questions are chosen on identities (politician, police, doctor, artist, and so on) which represent certain institutions and systems in Turkey. In summary, the application part of the study aims to asses the emotional intelligence abilities of primary school children who watch news reports, their ideas and opinions on news reports and as a combination of both, their ideas and opinions on Turkey.
