Abstract

Research since 1972 has documented that televised violence has an adverse effect on the viewer. Since the early days of television there have been various efforts at intervention to reduce levels of televised violence. No past efforts have had a durable effect toward positive change. Various modes of prevention are described and assessed, including actions by governmental and citizens groups. Until there is active collaboration among all parties concerned, including the television industry itself, progress will not be significant.
