Abstract

Developments in CCITT which relate to the standardization of communicating systems which make of the public telecommunication networks are described; telephony is not included. The relationship with the other major international standards body, namely ISO, is also covered. Consideration is given to the nature of the CCITT and ISO involvement in creating international standards. A brief history of the CCITT role in the area of Teleservices is provided; the relevant CCITT Recommendations are identified. In addition to describing the specific, CCITT-defined text and messages systems, an analysis of their generic styles of operation is given. The relationship of the CCITT work to other activities (i.e. Open Systems Interconnection and ISO's Text & Office Systems) is discussed and the future CCITT work areas are mentioned. The communication attributes of the systems are summarised and related to the attributes pertinent to the ISDN.
