Abstract

Focal temporal-lobe pathology, as in acute herpes simplex encephalitis or pharmacoresistant temporal-lobe epilepsy, may result in serious memory deficit and personality changes because the affected hippocampal formation has an important role in memory function. Early diagnosis of these diseases and the starting of appropriate treatment is necessary to prevent extensive memory deficits. In temporal-lobe epilepsy, epileptic discharges are often confined to deep mesiotemporal areas and are, therefore, only detectable on special electroencephalographic recordings. 1 Noebels JL Targeting epilepsy genes.
