Abstract

This chapter reviews current mental health needs in Taiwan, and provides a summary of the history of Telemedicine and Telemental health services. In addition, Taiwan has a growing elderly population, and there is an increasing number of elderly living in nursing homes, which is considered a highly stressful event associated with depression and loneliness. To outline the implementation of telemental health in Taiwan, the authors of this chapter highlight a case of providing videoconferencing-based services to geriatric populations residing in nursing homes. Acceptance of the use of technology, the intervention’s efficacy in reducing loneliness and improving depression symptoms, and the challenges facing its scaling up are reviewed. The chapter goes on to provide recommendation for widespread application of TMH services.
