Abstract

Cello has deformed its role and offered new possibilities through various pedagogical missions pursued by composers such as Georg Goltermann. His most famous concerto became the foundation studied by cello students around the world. One of the most famous for its melodic character and musical elements is the cello concerto no. 4 in G Major Opus 65. This piece is very popular among cellists as a student concerto because it offers a variety of musical material that supports the development of techniques starting from fingering, shifting, framing, and most importantly the richness and beauty of the music which gives cellists the opportunity to conceptualize how the interpretation will be developed. This article aims to reveal how the interpretation material instructed by Goltermann can be conceptualized as an option that can be reproduced in order to build a precise and compelling musical expression. The method used is a historical study of the composer and a literature study regarding the focus of the research. In summary, the result found is that the musical diversity contained in this work is the main factor that plays a role in shaping the understanding of the interpretation of the composer’s work.
