Abstract

Background: We aimed to determine if prophylactic teicoplanin reduced catheter-related infections in patients needing intensive chemotherapy. Material and Patients: Thirty patients with hematological malignancies requiring Hickman catheters for intensive chemotherapy received two single bolus intravenous injections of teicoplanin immediately before insertion of double lumen Hickman catheter and 24 hours later. Results: We did not observe exit site infections, tunnel infections or catheter-related gram-positive septicaemia. No adverse reaction was reported in any of the patients in the prophylactic group. Conclusion: Prophylactic teicoplanin therefore may be used routinely for patients requiring insertion of Hickman catheters for intensive chemotherapy to reduce the early incidence of catheter-related sepsis, especially during the associated period of neutropenia following chemotherapy or during bone marrow transplantation.
