Teenagers' experiences of postnatal care and breastfeeding

Abstract

This audit explores young women's views and experiences of in-patient and community postnatal care in Oxford, UK. Twenty-nine teenage mothers responded to a postal questionnaire received between one and four months postpartum. Their responses indicate a requirement for more proactive help and support with basic babycare tasks, and are discussed in relation to the small amount of research into this area. Of the respondents 80% indicated an intention to breastfeed, but many either did not start or gave up very quickly. Strategies to support young mothers to breastfeed suggested by other research are explored. Implications for future research and support initiatives are discussed.
