Abstract

I'm writing to commend you for your article, Celebrity Suicides can Influence Vulnerable Teens, by Susan Birk ( AAP News , April 1995). The frightening upward trend in teen suicides underscores the need, as pointed out by the author, for prevention and early identification at the primary-care level, including pediatrics and family practice. As a developmental pediatrician and now a practicing child psychiatrist, I wholeheartedly concur with Ms. Birk that primary-care physicians have a golden opportunity to screen for signs and symptoms of depression with each encounter and save lives. It is essential that the health-care system be redesigned to empower our primary-care physicians to be effective in this endeavor.
