Abstract
The development of tectonophysical notions enabled us to divide the territory of the U.S.S.R. into areas and parts differing in structure, composition, and state of matter inside the upper mantle. The author proposes to divide the tectonic movements of different regions into isostatic and anti-isostatic groups, using a special nomogramme for the purpose (Fig.2). The state of stress of the upper mantle is approximately evaluated according to the value of the velocity gradient of tectonic movements. It has been established by means of tectonophysical methods that large masses of basic and acid magmas may originate independently in time and space under different physical conditions. This means that widely accepted petrological concepts do not agree with modern tectonic and tectonophysical data.
