Abstract

The Banat—Srednogorie rift is located on the Balkan Peninsula, in the northeastern part of the Alpine system. It is superimposed on a continental type basement which cuts across older structures. The rift is filled with a 3–8 km thick layer of Upper Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanogenic rocks. The volcanic and plutonic formations belong to four series: calc-alkaline, tholeiitic, potassic-alkaline and peralkaline. The rift was formed in three stages: 1. (1) The formation of the sedimentary trough. 2. (2) subsidence accompanied by intense volcanic activity and tephroidal flysch sedimentation 3. (3) inversion, expressed in the Laramide deformation. The epicontinental rifting occurred in the preorogenic stage of the geotectonic development of the Balkanide-Dinarides after the closure of the Vardar paleo-ocean and the formation of an embryonal orogenic arc.
