Abstract
Abstract We examined leveling and trilateration data for southern California. We used mathematical models that allow for both tectonic motion and systematic errors. For both data types we find evidence of systematic errors. The leveling data reveal no significant tectonic motion except the direct effects of earthquakes. Trilateration data show steadily accumulating shear strain, but previously reported episodic dilatations probably result from systematic errors.
