Abstract
Membrane stresses generated by the northward movement of the African plate over a non-spherical earth provide a possible explanation for tectonic activity in West Africa and the Gulf of Guinea. The change from a compressional regime (90 m.y. to 40 m.y.) to an extensional regime (40 m.y. to present day) occurred when the effective mechanical centre of the African plate crossed the equator.
