Abstract

This paper brings to light the results obtained through new geological studies of the Açungui Group in the Rio Branco do Sul region, State of Paraná. Structurally, three deformation systems were recognized. The older one, named Açungui Thrust System, comprises several structures such as thrust faults, foliations S1 (or C), S and S2, drag-folds D1, and lineations of "a" and "b" types. The second one, named Apiai Fold System, comprises folds printed over the earlier structures, at varíable style and scale, and the third one, named Lancinha Transcurrent System, is responsíble for the main lineaments of the studied area. Stratigraphically, the Açunguí Group is composed of several lithologic assemblages, most of them limited by thrust faults. Each assemblage has its own regular internai lithological organization. Mainly as a consequence of thrust faulting, the stratigraphy of the Açungui Group has little resemblance with its original stratigraphy. It better reflects aleatory stacking of several tectonic slices, each one with one or more lithologic assemblages
