Abstract

For architects who graduated in 1990 and before, the fourth dimension necessarily meant involving the concept of “time”, it established “walking through” the buildings, “living the space”. Le Corbusier proposed “faire la promenade”, that is, to create walks through the architectural work as one of the objectives that designers should consider. In the case of BIM Building Information Modeling, 4D is in my opinion understood in very different ways, it should be mentioned that obviously the methodology has evolved and will continue to do so, it is a dynamic methodology and as such there will be concepts that acquire a new meaning or that adapt to other contexts. The concept of temporality is becoming more and more important in different processes not only related to BIM, but it is not exclusive to 4D, it is a factor present during the whole process, from 1D, 2D, 3D…xD. The methodology is neither linear nor consecutive, the scopes, the objectives and therefore the activities to be performed are largely determined by the client. Technology plays a fascinating role, allowing to “visualize” concepts that do not yet exist physically -virtuality-, but also developing models and techniques to try to understand aspect of the past.
