Abstract

This chapter focuses on technology, which is one area of policing that is believed to be central to carrying out effective crime prevention strategies. It emphasizes that the evidence for the impact of technology on the police and outcomes that the police care about is weaker compared to the research evidence for various crime prevention strategies. It also highlights the realm of policing technology that provides a good example of an area in which police are playing catch-up with regard to evidence-based policing. The chapter discusses the potential impacts of technology on policing, what is known about its actual impacts, and what is further needed to understand on implementing technology in evidence-based ways. It covers four technologies: information technologies, crime analysis, license plate readers, and body worn cameras.
