Abstract

Empire State College (ESC), a statewide organization, has eleven operating centers, most of which have several smaller units attached, thus allowing the institution to increase access and serve students locally across the state of New York. Drawing on my 35-year experience at ESC, in this essay I will explore the role that these regionally dispersed centers and their units have played in the evolution of a progressive college and the impacts that increasingly available technologies have had on the institution’s organization, on our autonomy and connection, and on our service to students.
