An assessment of the new technologies available to practicing engineers and the impact on the civil engineering profession, the paper discusses how new technologies are being used in the areas of communication, education, and engineering practice to improve productivity and increase job interest and professional satisfaction. The writer reports on the availability, cost, and benefits of voice processing, techniques of teleconferencing, videoconferencing, including the use of satellite‐based transmission for interactive communication for seminars, workshops, and postgraduate engineering studies, in particular, the National Technological University offering over 400 courses. Postgraduate engineering degree programs and numerous training programs offered on videotape are discussed. The writer describes benefits of new technical advances used by practicing engineers, including advances in computer‐aided design (CAD), DC‐ROM information systems, computer interface between surveyors and engineering, and scanning of documents.
