Abstract

Since business environmental scanning was first developed, conditions inside and outside the business enterprise have changed a great deal, suggesting the need for updating the process. A major question is how the process fits with new information technology. After reviewing a general scanning process and the new IT setting (one that is stepping up its support for knowledge work and use of outside sources), specific options for computer support are explored. Newer hypertext and object-oriented representations are a useful foundation upon which flexible and cooperative models can be built. New indexing and filtering techniques facilitate the accession of materials via the web. Technologies easily disrupt crucial interpretive and collaborative tasks, however, and guidance is offered on how to keep strategic deliberation in the forefront.
