Abstract

The main methods for joining sapphire to metals, used at present in the manufacture of discharge lamps, are investigated. The mechanism of interaction of titanium with sapphire and copper is studied. A method of vacuum-arc spraying titanium on the lamp bulb followed by brazing a Kovar current lead with a copper brazing alloy is proposed for producing sapphire–metal vacuum tight joints.
