Abstract
Our research adopts an exploratory approach of empirically testing the impact of information communication technology on the institutional conditions of news organizations in developing countries for their sustainable growth as independent news agencies. So far, institutional studies have been mainly constrained to case studies or descriptive results, rather than conducting inferential analyses. The institutional discussion has not yet extended beyond the editorial process in the newsroom, which limits a holistic understanding of the behaviors of news organizations by overlooking a complicated procedure of news production systems, including business management. Using data from the Media Sustainability Index (MSI) of the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX), which evaluates news media system for independent news reporting, we perform an exploratory analysis of the impact of Internet adoption on the freedom of speech, business management, and the plurality of news, the primary constituents of institutional conditions for a news media system. The present study paves the way for further discussion concerning the contributing role of the Internet at the juncture of news organizations and the Internet.
