Abstract

This article discusses recent technology developments in security equipment used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Enhanced Security Monitoring (ESM) component. ESM is a key element of a contamination warning system and includes equipment and procedures used for real‐time detection and timely response to security breaches at high‐risk distribution system facilities. ESM relies heavily on established security equipment, such as cameras and motion sensors that have proved effective in other critical infrastructure sectors. The article focuses on recent developments and industry trends for intrusion detection, access control, video surveillance, and communication methods.
