Abstract
AbstractThe research advocates a text-based cross-linguistic approach to cohesion and explores its application in academic (instructional) and fiction (narrative) texts. The approach permits a multifaceted research of cohesion across languages, registers and types of texts. We exemplify cohesive devices in English instructional texts and contrast mechanisms of cohesion in E.Th Seton’s short-story and its two translations into Russian using critical analysis and a web tool RuLingva. We extend the notion of cohesion beyond a sentence or adjacent sentences level and focus on the relations between text elements in paragraphs and texts. RuLingva technologies enable computing cohesion in a text and its parts. Apart from discussing cohesion we introduce a concept of ‘viscosity’ construed as text resistance to change, shift or eliminate its elements. The research findings provide a broad context for understanding the range of cohesive devices which may be useful for cross-linguistic and text comprehension studies.KeywordsCohesionConnectorComprehension
