Abstract

This systematic literature review (SLR) explores the application of geospatial technologies, particularly Geographic Information Systems (GIS), in unauthorized building modifications in urban areas. Unauthorized building modifications pose significant challenges to urban planning, including unregulated growth, safety hazards, and non-compliance with zoning laws. This review aims to synthesize current research, identify effective GIS strategies, and highlight challenges and opportunities in integrating geospatial technologies for regulatory compliance and urban management. Findings suggest that while GIS offers advanced tools for precise monitoring and data analysis, there are notable hurdles concerning technological readiness, organizational adoption, and legislative frameworks
