Abstract

There is great variation in the level of self-reliance amongst different sectors within a country and amongst different countries which can only be explained by taking into consideration the whole range of activities of technology accumulation. The Indian pesticides sector has been chosen to show how a clear-cut, well defined and prioritised identification of national production, as well as the technological needs of this sector, could pave the way for technological self-reliance. The importance is highlighted of interlinking various components such as conducive policy measures, a supportive role for national laboratories, and capability building through knowledge accumulation in achieving technological self-reliance. The study provides evidence of the gradual move away from dependency by the pesticide industry and the role of government-funded research in achieving autonomy. Copyright , Beech Tree Publishing.
