Abstract

The application of the superplastic bulging of metal sheet in industry has been shown to be a very good method for forming thin shell workpieces that are complicated in shape; however, it has also posed some particular problems which can be solved by mechanical theory. In this paper, superplastic bulging is divided roughly into two stages: free bulging and fill forming. On the basis of previous work, the forming limit is analysed theoretically. Furthermore, the optimum loading conditions and the method of determining technical parameters are discussed so that the forming limit of superplastic bulging can be increased and the bulging time decreased. Free-bulging tests and forming tests on Zn-22wt.%Al metal sheet are in satisfactory agreement with the analytical conclusions.
