Abstract

This paper presents the lighting systems retrofit according to the European Standard EN12464-1 in an educational building of the Department of Mechanical Technology, Industrial Training Institute, Selandar, Melaka, Malaysia. The building and lighting systems simulation has carried out using DIALux software. The T5 and LED luminaires are used as alternative luminaires to replace existing T8 luminaires in the building. The analysis involved in this study are the lighting power density (LPD), lighting energy numeric indicator (LENI), energy savings potential, payback period (PP) and annualized life cycle cost (ALCC). Based on the results, by retrofitted T8 luminaires with the LED luminaires achieved energy savings of 32%, PP of 5.5 years and ALCC of RM 24,286.86. It showed that the LED luminaires provided the great performance to replace the existing luminaires due to lowest LPD, LENI, payback period and ALCC and highest energy savings compared to T8 luminaires.
