Abstract
BackgroundWith the increasing municipal solid waste (MSW) generation, the clean and efficient utilization of MSW becomes an essential part of a sustainable environment. MethodsBased on the comparison of the MSW gasification power generation (MGPG) and the MSW incineration power generation (MIPG) technologies in two cities of China with different development levels (Leizhou and Shenzhen), the applicability of the small-scale MSW treatment technology was analyzed. Significant findingsThe results showed that the exergy efficiency of MGPG and MIPG was approximately 27% and 17%, respectively. MGPG was more environmentally friendly, but MIPG showed a stronger stability in resisting policy risks. In addition, under the current market conditions, the equipment investment (EI) of MGPG was 1.5–2 times more than MIPG, but in the same city, the profit of MGPG was 1.5–2.0 times more than MIPG. Leizhou MGPG (LGG) case obtained the highest profit (294.16 CNY/t), while the Shenzhen MIPG (SIG) case obtained the lowest profit (23.74 CNY/t). Moreover, the power generation of Shenzhen MGPG (SGG) case (15,034.6894 kW) is obviously less than that of LGG (33,022.8436 kW). Therefore, MGPG technology could be regarded as a promising alternative power generation process in underdeveloped areas, such as Leizhou.
