Abstract

This article examines one piece of music, Nϵporo, performed by women from the town of Lambussie in the Upper West region of Ghana The piece, I was told, is “always the same”. This article attempts to define what is meant by this statement through an examination of the techniques and apparent principles of performance. It is based on the detailed observation of a number of performances which were recorded over a period of about 30 months.
