Abstract

This chapter explores the techniques of treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). It considers the more specific technical recommendations for achieving the overall psychological aim of mentalization-based treatment (MBT), including the identification and appropriate expression of affect, development of stable internal representation, formation of a coherent sense of self, and capacity to form secure relationships. The chapter also considers how to translate these aims into clinical interventions within each of the principal therapeutic contexts of the programme (individual and group therapy).
