Abstract

Dr Kapetansky has done an excellent job of depicting the various operations that have been useful in patients with cleft lip and palate seen in his own clinic. He has discussed several of his techniques that are not in universal usage, such as the utilization of local anesthesia for some of the surgical procedures, standard employment of a dental plate following all cleft lip repair, a running cuticular suture for cleft lip repair, and the emphasis of long-acting local anesthetic agents for prolonged local anesthesia. The book is divided into four parts as follows: (1) primary procedures in cleft lip and nose reconstruction; (2) deferred procedures in cleft lip and nose repair; (3) cleft palate reconstruction and pharyngeal flap procedures; and (4) unusual cleft problems and long-term cleft reconstruction. In the first part, he divides the primary procedures into unilateral and bilateral, with a chapter on each type of deformity.
